The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published an article stating: “The median annual wage for computer and information technology occupations was $91,250 in May 2020, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $41,950.”
I’m a believer that money should never be the sole determining factor in career decisions. Happiness, quality of fit with the career, and personal dreams should all be accounted for as well. That being said, money is part of the equation, right? If Career A pays nearly $50,000 more per year than Career B, C, D, etc., shouldn’t that factor into your child’s career decisions? Even if your child doesn’t end up in a coding or robotics career, isn’t now a great time to see if they are interested?
Introduce them to Scratch, a kid-friendly and safe introduction to code for grade school students (older students can use it too for getting introduced to coding). If your child is interested in taking a
class, YEL offers classes in Scratch in multiple communities (visit https://youthenrichmentleague.com/portfolio-item/coding-summer-camp/ to learn more).
Python is also a great way to learn code, but it is a step up from Scratch and better for older students.
531,200 NEW jobs through 2029! The same U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics article states that for the foreseeable future, computer and information technology jobs will be in high demand in the USA. Another article at Best Colleges.com declares that in 2019 there were 665,000 computer job openings in the USA, but there were fewer than 72,000 computer science graduates to fill them.
We have a son entering his senior year in high school, so we’ve been touring colleges with an eye on computer science. The computer science departments in these schools state that students have a very high return on the investment in a computer science degree. Colorado School of Mines in Golden Colorado touts a 98% positive outcome rate for CS graduates, and an average starting wage of $72,931 for those same graduates.
Computer technology is expanding and will be for the foreseeable future. There are even washing machines with apps that notify you when the laundry is done. Sheesh!
George Gilder’s visionary book, Life After Google: The Fall of Big Data and the Rise of the Blockchain Economy highlights the upcoming changes to the computer industry. Including upcoming innovation in the blockchain economy, restoring privacy into the hands of the end user, replacing silicon chips with carbon based chips and more.
With technology and innovation coming at us from every turn, there is no doubt that those who hold degrees in computer technology and information will have a steady stream of career opportunities for as far into the future as we can see.
P.S. Mr. Gilder’s book also gives a near encyclopedic history of computing and the human giants of innovation who have made computing and the Google algorithm what they are today. A great read for budding computer scientists or those interested in learning more about the future of computing.

We have seen time and time again a budding entrepreneur develop an app, a technology, or a platform that reaped millions or even billions of dollars in revenue.
Pre-COVID, I belonged to a business group called C12 (highly recommended). Within that group we have had tech visionaries over the years. These visionaries have developed tech based solutions to delivering parts in a timely manner to technicians on the job (Dispatchit.com) or better ways for resorts to manage their advertising, bookings, customer tracking, and more (Travel Net Solutions). These companies both started with a vision and an entrepreneurial spirit. Both needed computer and coding technology solutions to realize their visions. Without that base knowledge, their dreams may have never been realized.
At YEL, we have a custom built database for tracking our classes, teachers, etc. I have a basic knowledge of the coding for this database, but have hired KVC to build it. My basic knowledge has allowed me to speak with their coding engineers and understand the possibilities of the software solutions. I have also been able to make minor adjustments on the back end to add enhancements here and there and save time and money.
Learning the basics of coding might be considered today what learning how to clean a carburetor or rewire a light socket was in past generations. That is an essential tool to navigate the world in which we live. YEL Coding classes are a great place to get your child started in coding.
Now that you know the benefits of a base knowledge in coding, you are probably wondering how you get your child started in coding. I mentioned Scratch and Python earlier. Their online tutorials are really good and a solid place to start. However, most children prefer to have a knowledgeable teacher guide them through the initial stages of learning a new subject. YEL offers 1/2 day coding camps in dozens of communities. These camps feature kid-friendly, dynamic instructors and robust, comprehensive curriculum sure to keep your child engaged and learning.
You can search our registration page for classes near you. Simply enter your zip code and choose “Coding” from the “Course Subject” menu.
