I have to share, Braedon is an incredible chess coach and teacher! I even had a teacher from WVR come up to me yesterday and say, “that Chess teacher is great, he has the kids so engaged”.
He just seems to “get it” and does an amazing job!

I think the atmosphere of respect and the amount of work the kids do makes a good learning environment, and I think the kids feel great about their accomplishments and progress. They have lots of fun, too!

We are so fortunate to have Chris teach my kids chess at northeast. I was unable to take my child to chess years ago because it was not offered at our school. I really hope other students take advantage of this wonderful program that helps kids think strategically. It’s a lot of fun too. Thanks again

This time it was WAY too full and we ended up not going and switching our son to a private fencing club so that he could get the attention and training we were hoping for. This was not Chris's fault, he had to manage too many kids of differing skill and experience levels and it was not a good experience because we felt like our son was not learning. The instructor did not know how to make it age appropriate for the audience, the classes started late and moved very very slowly. I also don't know why I paid for a class that was on Halloween night 10/31. Told the instructor that class was scheduled for Halloween at the time every child in the class was going to be trick or treating and he said "I don't know, I don't schedule things." That is not appropriate or fair. He knew at the session-end tournament he had no chance of winning against someone much, much bigger and more skilled than him. It isn't appropriate for 6th graders to be with high schoolers. We would be willing to drive to a different metro area school to be with other middle-schoolers rather than have our 6th grader be in class with high schoolers. Also, we felt the session-end tournament was poorly run. The teacher didn't have control and they ran out of time to even finish all the bouts. That's just poor planning. | 0.5 | This is the second fencing class that he has taken with the same instructor. We were underwhelmed this past summer with the level of instruction during the week-long camp at Southwoods but decided to give it another chance, and unfortunately, he had a worse experience than this summer. There seems to be very little guidance and education about fencing done by the instructor. She appears to lack the ability to control young kids and create an environment where she has their attention. My son has learned very little about the sport of fencing other than the basic steps which were essentially a repeat of the summer's information. Further, in both the summer and the fall tournaments, the instructor decided it'd be a good idea to have the kids serve as referees to the matches. While this can be helpful in a practice setting so that they kids understand how to score a match, all this approach led to in both cases was confusion and arguments between the kids. I have a video of my son in a match where the referee is clearly missing the first strikes made and awarding points to the child making the late or second strike. Can you imagine how frustrating that must be for a child who is doing his/her best in a new sport? Finally, we also have a photo of the instructor on her phone in the second to last class while her students are practicing. He doesn't like to speak up to ask for help or have directions repeated. The smaller class size helped some. He does better with in person classes, but we signed up for online because that's about all that is available right now. I don't know if it is possible to next time to have videos or instruction sheets sent out so that we could practice after class and we could help him with it one on one? He can't remember how the tricks go and I wasn't able to help him during the class most of the time because of work. I understand that wouldn't allow for the illusion to stay secret so maybe it wouldn't be possible with this particular subject. Riley has taken several YEL classes and he always has a lot of fun while still learning. All the teachers have been great and have had lots of patience! | 3 | Very nice guy, and I know the pandemic has probably thrown a wrench into the delivery of this program, but I have seen two major deficiencies (I leave it to your discretion to assign the relative degrees of responsibility between the instructor and the organization): 1) Delivery of the content / use of technology. At least half of almost every session has involved struggles with the technology, whether it's GoToMeeting, Chess.com, ChessKid.com, or whatever visual aids (often Notepad) are being used. 2) Pedagogy. There doesn't appear to be one. In the first session, we were discussing strategy and tactics before the nature and rules of the game had been explained. There were examples of specific checkmate strategies before it was explained what "checkmate" was. Mr. Hoover is clearly very knowledgeable, patient, and well-intentioned, but the course would be much more effective if there were 1) a specific plan for how to use the technology to deliver the content, and 2) a specific plan for the orderly, graduated presentation of the material. Again, I'm sure this arrangement is new for everyone and presents a ton of new challenges.
