Why is it so important for your kids to learn coding?
Coding, better known to most adults as computer programming, is not only fun to learn, but it can provide your child with a competitive advantage when the time comes to seek employment, perhaps an internship, or college admission. While that may seem a long way off for your elementary school child, the years will fly by faster than you think, so the earlier you help them develop skills in life, the more successful they can become.
While there are plenty of on-line websites that will teach your child the basics of coding for free, or at minimal
cost, having the advantage of a “live” instructor to interact with during coding classes makes for a more fulfilling experience. That’s where {YEL!} comes in. Our coding classes are specifically designed to be fun and educational at the same time. And it can give your son or daughter a head- start in the world of coding.
So, let’s try to answer the question about the importance of kids learning to code.
Consider these reasons:
- We live in a digital world, with no end in sight. If ever. This in turn makes programming a high-demand career possibility.
- Coding has been shown to increase creativity, while at the same time being fun and a real confidence builder, especially for a young mind.
- Since coding is the language which tells a computer what to do with specific keystrokes, it is intricately tied to the development of apps, websites and computer software. And computers run the world.
- Since computers run virtually everything electrical these days, understanding how to write (build) code can lead to other career paths including engineering, program development and yes, even teaching (see our related post “Five Reasons Youth Robotics Education is so Important“). The multitude of directions that can be taken by a proficient coder is limitless.
- Coders get to design how apps and websites look, and function, for the end-user. It can expand the mind of the developer and dramatically increases their understanding of technology.
- Coding builds confidence and is responsible for much of the innovation we experience in our lives. For the last several decades computer science has revolutionized the world in which we live.
Educators strongly believe that the earlier children are exposed to coding, the more successful their lives will be. At a younger age when their brains are still developing, much like learning a foreign language, coding helps to instill problem-solving and thinking skills that will be crucial to success down the road.
But let’s not get carried away here. We’re also speaking about youngsters who want to have fun. And what kid doesn’t? By enrolling your child in a coding class, they will make new friends, learn new skills and open their mind to a whole new world. And, it’s a superb way to have quality computer time without playing endless hours of mindless video games.
YEL’s job is to make coding fun, and that’s what we’re all about, while at the same time helping to prepare today’s youngsters for a great life ahead. Consider coding as an exciting opportunity to start learning about the world of technology, which is the cornerstone of almost every industry.
