Track and Field
{YEL!} Track and Field Classes for Kids
{YEL!} Track and Field Classes for Kids focus on:
- Introductory Skills – Players will be introduced to a number of events in Olympic track and field. Javelin, shot put, discus, hurdles, relay races and more.
- Safety – The field equipment is all designed for safe use by youth. The javelin is light weight and has a large rubber tip. All students stand behind the person tossing the javelin. The discus is also lighter and made of rubber.
- Inclusion – Everyone participates all the time. There is very little down time in this program. The coach is trained to watch the safety of all students and keep the classes moving at a brisk pace. We also make sure students get to try out all events.
- Decathlon – We end each session with an in-class decathlon where everyone participates in all the events for the mini-olympic decathlon.
- Fun – We keep it light and fun. The focus is on doing better than you did at the last class, not doing better than the student next to you.
Why {YEL!} Track and Field
- Our youth need to stay active.
- They need to try out multiple sports to see which sports they like most.
- They need to learn what it means to work as a team in relays and other events.
- See our blog post, “What Problems Do After School Programs Solve?” for more in-depth view of after school programming for kids.
- {YEL!} Track and Field Classes for Kids are excellent introductory classes for kids who want to learn about these awesome Olympic events and build a foundation for participating on future teams.
YEL Track and Field Classes for Kids feature:
- Our trademarked Teach It! Practice It! Play It!® methodology
- Teach It! – Each class, the coach teaches introductory skills for each track or field event.
- Practice It! – During the Practice It! portion of class, players work on their skills with the coach keeping an eye out for safety and inclusion.
- Play It! – Kids love to try what they’ve learned in a track or field event against other students. We set up mini-games each class for all players to participate in.
- Dynamic coaches – We aren’t looking for an olympic gold medal winner to coach our track and field classes. We are looking for dynamic coaches who are great with kids and can teach them the basic skills following our curriculum.
- Solid curriculum – Our track and field curriculum lays out day-by-day skill building exercises, and challenges to keep the students engaged throughout each class.
- Merit Prizes – Each player receives at least one sports trading card each class for showing up, working hard, and keeping their focus. Players can earn additional cards by winning a variety of games played during class. Players also can receive a player of the day award for: 1) being a great teammate; 2) improving on their skills from previous weeks; 3) helping the coach with cleanup; 4) making a great play. NOTE: Every player will earn a player of the day award at some point throughout the session as long as they work hard and focus.
