Modified Median

Modified Median is like Solkoff (see Solkoff) in that it measures the strength of your opponents.  Solkoff adds up the total scores of all of your opponents.  The higher your score, the harder competition you faced.

Modified Median removes the

  • –lowest score if you are a plus player (meaning you have won more games than you have lost).  Essentially, it removes your easiest game.
  • –highest score if you are a minus player (meaning you have lost more games than you have won).  Essentially, it removes your most difficult opponent.
  • –both your highest and your lowest score if you are an even player (meaning you have an scored 50% of the total available points for that tournament).

For instance, suppose two players with 4-1 scores met players who ended with the following scores:

Player A: 0,3,3,4,5

Player B: 3,2,5,3,3

Player A’s Solkoff tiebreak is 0+3+3+4+5=15, Player B’s is 3+2+5+3+3=16. Player A’s Modified Median is 3+3+4+5=15 (discard the 0) and Player B’s is 3+5+3+3=14 (discard the 2). Player A’s Median is 3+3+4=10, Player B’s is 3+3+3=9. If we use Modified Median or Median first, A ranks higher than B; if we use Solkoff first, B ranks higher than A.
